Mythical beasts carry blessings to the traditional Chinese culture. They are often seen in government premises and religious objects to drive away evil. This scroll weight is a scholars' object in the form of a mythical beast that carries a blessing to a better future. Seated on a circular carved base, the beast is crouched. Made from lustrous white jade, the scroll weight's surface is mottled with slight inclusions. The beast is seated with its head held high. It has bulging eyes, thick brows, high nose and mouth slightly opened, showing the teeth. Its tail curled and the hair of the neck lies smoothly on its back. Half seated and half kneeled, the beast is ready to sprint forward. The expression on its face is radiant and ferocious. The carving skills were superb and smooth as the huiwen pattern was insisted at the rim of the circular base. The beast symbolizes mysteriousness and strength, to protect people from evil spirits for hundreds of years. The beast is carved in a well-balanced proportion with ferocious expression, which proves the extraordinary craftsmanship of the period, hence enhancing the aesthetic quality of the beast.
