+ OVERVIEW

This work was created by PU Tzu at the age of thirty-three and consists of transcriptions of eleven writings by Huang Binhong on painting theories. Huang Binhong, a modern master of landscape painting, initially rooted his work in tradition while innovating within the realm of realistic landscape painting. In his later years, he was influenced by Western Impressionism, becoming more concise yet deeply expressive, showcasing his solid skill and mastery of ink techniques. The texts selected by PU Tzu primarily explore the evolution of painting history and the distinctive styles of renowned masters.
Beyond practicing the works of historical calligraphers, PU Tzu enjoys transcribing theoretical writings that align with his artistic philosophy. To him, the insights and reflections of past masters serve as essential nourishment for his creative process. His studies include the writings of Sun Guoting, Su Dongpo, Huang Tingjian, Zhao Mengfu, Fu Shan, and Kang Youwei. Additionally, he has authored PU Tzu on Calligraphy, in which he articulates his own understanding of calligraphy. Among modern painters and calligraphers, Huang Binhong’s concept of achieving inner beauty through quiet contemplation strongly resonates with PU Tzu and has inspired his later artistic expressions.
PU Tzu does not view calligraphy as merely an experiment in abstraction. He deeply values historical traditions and the artistic achievements of his predecessors, absorbing them and transforming them into his own. His calligraphy seeks innovation within tradition, incorporating personal emotions and philosophical insights. This delicate balance between tradition and modernity allows PU Tzu’s work to carry historical depth while also embodying a contemporary sensibility, forming a distinctive and unique calligraphic style.
