+ OVERVIEW

Huang Chun-Pi was born in 1898 in Guangdong, graduated in 1919 from a school in the province. At 17, he followed Li Yao-Ping and later taught in Pui Ching Middle School and led the Guangzhou School of Art. He served as a professor at the Faculty of Arts of the National Central University with Xu Bei-Hong for 11 years. During the war, Huang followed the government and moved to Sichuan. During that period, he joined Zhang Da-Qian and other artists to hike and paint on the spot. This forms a solid base for his artistic career. His art education career never stopped. In 1949, he moved to Taiwan and became a professor of arts at the National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU). He held solo exhibitions in Taipei, Canada, the US, Singapore and South Korea. During the 22 years of teaching, he established the national art education system and invited prominent artists and alumni into the University. A new generation of artists were nourished under the system. Huang's followers were plenty including Soong Mei-Ling and Anna Chan Chennault.

This work was painted by Huang Chun-Pi in 1953, the fourth year of stay in Taiwan. Inscription reads "Misty lake and hills among the reed field, I wish I could call this home." It seems he wished to stay here. He also wrote "Autumn 1953, short stay in Taipei". Curious enough, he was already taught at the NTNU for four years. He still seemed to have hope of returning to his homeland. As the lake and hills slowly covered with autumn palettes, a few trees are still glowing with luscious green. A lake by a mountain where mists rise from the wet reeds, towards the distant hills. A house sits by the lake in the distance. A boat gently rocks by the shore. Such tranquil landscape was the ideal residing place for the artist. The lake, the mountain and the misty reed field. These three elements formed this scholarly painting, rejoicing over the poetic, almost heavenly, beauty of the landscape.
